The Food Plot System - Kevin Boyer

Kevin grew up in a small rural community on a small farm.  One of his grandfathers was an AG teacher for over 36 years, so farming, raising livestock , fishing farm ponds,  hunting, and  trapping were part of his everyday life. Growing up meant being outside and helping out on the farm.

He began hunting small game before the age of 10 . At the magical age of 10, was when he was allowed to start hunting  whitetail deer with his dad and the rest of his family. Over the years, his hunting turned into a passion for chasing whitetails and learning more about them.

He purchased his first farm in 1984.  It was a small, 44 acre farm with pasture and some wooded ground. He began planting food plots and testing all kinds of seed. What he found out was a true side by side test plot was the only way for the deer to show what they like and don’t like and how their preferences change throughout the season.  He began turning this small farm into  a hunting paradise. He purchased three buck fawns to learn more about the whitetails he was pursuing each year.  He studied and did research on his three  bucks for eight years and he learned a lot from them.  He hand picked food from his food plots to give to his pen deer to see what they would eat.  They became pretty particular since they had everything they needed in their pen. The more that he studied the whitetail and their food preferences and habitats, the more he became obsessed with gaining more knowledge about the species.

At the same time that he was testing food plots and studying his pen deer, he also began filming his hunts.  He began keeping a record of what he saw and an inventory of the bucks that he passed up, in hopes of learning even more. As he learned and proved what  worked, his hunting accomplishments grew. He was invited to  speak at seminars to share all that he had learned. He began conducting land consulting projects  to help set up properties for others as well – www.elitelandconsulting.com. He enjoys sharing all the information that he has gained over the years with others that are interested.

He met Don Higgins when he came to write an article about his father and his family. The article was about the family’s  love of deer hunting.  Kevin and Don quickly became great friends and they have been working together ever since. They discovered that they both share the same passion and desire to learn as much as they can about the whitetail deer.  They shared so much in common that it only seemed natural to combine all that they knew and become business partners. They continued to test seeds and discover what the deer choose to eat. They also conduct  plant tissue tests so that they not only learn what the deer like to eat but they learn the amount of nutritional value that each plant offers. They have tested, and retested to keep up with what is the  best plants to use in their Real World Blends. Kevin is the owner of Elite Hunting Blinds & Towers, as well as the company called EZ Big game lifts and when not working as a heavy Equipment Operator he works as the Co-owner and President of Real World Wildlife Products.

Kevin lives with his wife Tara and his daughter Morgan near Casey, Illinois.  He now shares his passion with his daughter, who has also begun pursuing her whitetail dream.

Today Don and and his wife Robin continue to operate Higgins Outdoors (www.higginsoutdoors.com) which includes the production of potted trees and shrubs for wildlife habitat projects. He also works as a whitetail habitat consultant for clients looking to improve the deer hunting on their properties. If this wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Don is also co-owner of Real World Wildlife Seed Company (www.realworldwildlifeseed.com)

Don Higgins Bio
On November 16, 1979, 16-year-old Don Higgins shot his first whitetail, a 9-point buck. When he pulled the trigger on that monumental buck, God lit a passionate fire in his heart for whitetails, and especially big bucks, that burns hotter with each passing season. Don slowly honed his skills over the years and eventually started tagging mature whitetail bucks on a consistent basis. In 1996 North American Whitetail magazine published his first article and in the years since he has had hundreds of articles published in almost every major hunting magazine. He has also authored two very popular books on hunting trophy whitetails.
In 1991 Don purchased his grandparents small farm and soon began improving the wildlife habitat in hopes of one day killing a deer on the land he had roamed since birth and where his roots are so firmly anchored. The results far exceeded his expectations and that passionate hobby of creating quality deer habitat eventually became a full-time business. In 2002 Don walked away from a job of 20-years to strike out on his own doing what he loves. In the years since he has worked all over the Midwest planting literally millions of trees, shrubs and native grasses while creating thousands of acres of top-notch wildlife habitat.

Dan Armitage Biography

Dan Armitage is a popular freelance outdoor and travel writer, speaker and radio show host based in Ohio whose articles appear in Outdoor Life, In-Fisherman, AAA Home & Away, Ohio’s Country Journal, Boating, Ohio Outdoor News, and Ohio Game & Fish. He hosts the syndicated radio program “Buckeye Sportsman with Dan Armitage” presented by Cabela’s every Saturday on 24 Ohio radio stations (www.buckeyesportsman.net) . Dan travels the nation during the winter months conducting programs on fishing and boating subjects and will lead his popular “Kids Fishing 411” seminar daily at the Northeast Ohio Sportsmen Show.

Dan Armitage’s “Kids Fishing 411” Seminar
Atop the giant Hawg Trough mobile aquarium, Ohio-based outdoor writer and radio show host Dan Armitage will discuss the basics of fishing while demonstrating the use of simple tackle, hooks, bobbers and live bait featuring props that include the World’s Largest Bobber and the World’s Biggest Fishing Hook at this year’s Northeast Ohio Sportsmen Show. Armitage shows how to rig and use a cane pole, allows the kids to handle live bait like worms and minnows and, in dramatic style with live fish, shows how the baits should be presented to fish in the giant aquarium. He ends each show by allowing a child to join him atop the tank, demonstrates how to select and fit a PFD, and (hopefully) catch and release a fish!
